High Quality Wild Game and Venison
Newhouse Game has established a reputation for supplying quality wild game & venison
Newhouse Game is a small, family owned game dealer, based in Fawley, near Lepe Beach. They source all their meat in The New Forest and mainly sell their venison and small game meats at Hampshire Farmers Markets, some London Farmers Markets and through local Pubs and Farm Shops. With over 14 years of game trading experience, Newhouse Game strive to bring top quality venison and game from all around The New Forest for our valued customers.
Game meat, from wild animals, is very low in fat. Venison has 1% fat compared to 10% with lamb or 11% with beef and wild birds like pheasants and partridges is 50% lower in fat content than chicken.
The wild animals that produce our game meat eat a natural foraged diet, rather than mass-produced animal feed. This means that as well as being leaner, their meat has more flavour and is sustainable.
Game seasons
I’m often asked about game seasons and what is available when. It’s well known that most game is only available during the autumn and winter but why and what are the dates?
The ‘closed season’ when shooting is not allowed is there to protect animals when they’re breeding and rearing their young. Animals that are seen as pests or vermin such as rabbits, pigeons and muntjac deer have no closed season and culling them enables us to control their populations. These pests also breed all year round so it is impossible to define a single breeding season.
These dates indicate the shooting season, the actual availability may vary year to year especially if the animal is migratory.
And don’t forget we freeze game at the shop, so it can be available to you all year round. Our short supply chains from the field to our butchery mean that the meat is frozen very quickly to preserve its quality.
